Rosenwasser founded Kesley Street Press in 1974, making it one of the oldest indie publishers of literature by women. Gladman, whose Ravicka trilogy is a curious accomplishment in language and form, was first published by KSP. The two will read to celebrate the press.
International author Edugyan has held fellowships in eight countries. "Half Blood Blues" is the winner of the 2011 Scotiabank Giller Prize, awarded to "the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English." A mysterious event... and a confession 50 years later.
To see CAConrad or Eileen Myles would be worth the trip, but both--with David Buuck--is an event not to be missed. Conrad is joyously, obsessively experimental; Myles, "the rock star of modern poetry;" Buuck, who started The Bay Area Research Group of Enviro-aesthetics, stutters on p-p-purpose.
A local hero for his innovative verse and unique combination of humor and wry observation, Powell celebrates the release of his much-anticipated fifth collection of poetry to a packed house--get there early.
"The Edge of Maybe" is a wonderful portrait of East Bay culture that examines what happens when outsiders pierce the tenuous bubbles of lifestyle and family, with characters who lose and find themselves but always remain human. Lutz captures the nexus of one of the most diverse places in the U.S.
Hailed as one of the best novels of the year, Kunzru's "Gods Without Men" is at once cerebral and visceral without being heavy-handed, as larger than life characters converge in a mystical desert while searching for meaning.
Perhaps best known for her appearances on NPR's This American Life, Vowell's nonfiction books on American history and culture find startling connections between past and present and share them in a humorous, highly accessible way. "Unfamiliar Fishes" is the story of an independent Hawaii.
Award-winning author Ellen Ullman's new novel is a page-turning psychological mystery that probes obsession, insanity, heritage and self-worth through an engaging story uncanny in its literary form. The writing is as sharp as the intellect it reveals, with a tension that boders on the manic.
Terry Bisson's writing is at once fantastical and grounded in hard truths of this world. He describes "Any Day Now" as "not exactly science fiction, but not exactly not." Michael Chabon calls it "An unsettling, funny, freaky reimagining of America, impeccably written."
This lunchtime series is one of the strongest in the Bay Area. Glück was the U.S. Poet Laureate in 2003-4 , the winner of countless awards including the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize, and is currently the Rosenkranz Writer in Residence at Yale University.
Viracocha's lending library is an expertly curated neighborhood treasure filled with literary classics--global and local. For the third time it hosts an open mic for writers and members to share their favorite all-time passages, with excerpts no longer than 5 min. This one's a must-do.
Last year's collab between Litquake and Noise Pop was so successful they've decided to do it again: authors reading from music stars' memoirs. It doesn't get much funnier than this. Anthony Bedard hosts the likes of Bob Calhoun and Joel Selvin reading everything from Ozzy to Jewel.
