THE SANDBAR & GRILL Monterey, CA

"Where the locals go for good food, good fun and good company"

Sandbar & Grill
9 Fisherman's Warf
Monterey, CA

Whenever I have the craving for some tasty calamari; there is only one place I head to and that is the Sandbar and Grill located on the commercial wharf (otherwise known as Wharf #2) in Monterey. It is where the locals go to feel right at home. The Sandbar’s calamari appetizer is by far the most tender, tasty and succulent of any of the myriad of local seafood restaurants in Monterey. The portions are big enough for two people. I usually share mine with a friend or bring the rest home to enjoy the next day. The calamari is not the usual chewy “tubes and tentacles” prepared in such a heavy batter that you don’t know what the heck you’re eating. The chef prepares light and fluffy little pillows of calamari and oh- so-very slightly dredges them in a hint of batter that adds just the right flavor. It is served with the special tartar sauce that has just the right amount of capers to give it the perfect tang. (You can also ask for the traditional red cocktail sauce.) These are so tender you can cut them with a fork.

On the regular menu the price for this luscious treat is a reasonable $8.75; but if you go during “happy hour” and sit at the bar the price drops to $5.95.  Add a glass of house wine (5.50), a well drink ($4.50) or a happy hour beer ($3.50) and you get a complete meal for about $11.00. AND you get to call yourself a true “barfly!” Yes…the only requirement -- (as posted on the chalkboard above the bar) to get the happy hour deal is to sit at the bar. So I consider myself a true Sandbar & Grill “barfly.” Other scrumptious items on the happy hour menu include local Monterey sand dabs for $4.95, the very best clam chowder for $3.95, onion rings or French fries; each in generous portions for $2.50, and another favorite of mine the grilled salmon with fries for $10.95. I usually substitute fries for a fresh vegetable for a few dollars more. Not to be outdone by the “happy hour” menu is the “Go Giants menu” that is served any time of day when a SF Giants game is on TV. This menu is similar to the “happy hour” menu but also includes a burger with fries for $7.95. The “Go Giants menu” also applies anytime the San Jose Sharks or any NFL football game is on. (The barfly rule still applies.) The regular menu is large and varied -- full of the freshest fish, the biggest salads and even the best steak I have had in a long time. The daily fish specials come right off the fishing boats from Monterey Bay.
Oh, and did I mention that it is also in the most unique location? Located below the wharf and just above water level; dining at the Sandbar makes you feel as if you are on one of the many sailing and fishing boats that are continuously cruising by on their way in and out of the harbor. Otters and sea lions romp right outside the windows. One day as I was having dinner at one of the many window tables I looked down and in the water were thousands of jelly fish gently and magnificently floating by.
The Sandbar is also part of movie history as a big scene from the film “Play Misty for me” starring and directed by and Clint Eastwood was filmed there in 1972.

I highly recommend the Sandbar and Grill for a fun and unique dining experience.

Open every day at 11:00 except Sunday’s when they open at 10:30 for brunch.
Food is served all day and closing time is whenever…
Happy hour is 4:00p.m to 6:30p.m. M-F
